Picture Narration for Science Study

Narration according to Charlotte Mason's educational philosophy can be oral, picture, written or even acted out according to your child's needs. Today we studied the South American Amazon Rainforest. We learned about the Andes Mountain Range as well. We found the mountain range and coloured in the range on a map of South America. We read about several types of animals vicunas, leaf cutter ants, howler monkeys, humming birds, and spectacled bears to name a few. The children love being read to and listened intently; after we finished I asked them to draw a picture of what they remembered from the reading.

BigH drew a picture about the leaf cutter ants and remembered they climbed trees to get leaves to make food for the colony. I love the little ant carrying the leaf with his mandibles and antennae.

LittleE drew a picture of the humming bird we read about she was very careful to get all the colours right as she drew her picture. She copied from the picture that was in the book. She did not want to draw from memory.

"...my object is to show that the chief function of the child--his business in the world during the first six or seven years of his life--is to find out all he can, about whatever comes under his notice, by means of his five senses..."~ Charlotte Mason
